Dentistry for the Handicapped

Our membership has diligently labored to provide the necessary funds toward improvement in the oral health status of these special needs children.  For reasons beyond their control they are too often excluded from the mainstream of dental care.

The GROTTOES of North America offer this service to the physically and mentally challenged children who are afflicted with:
Cerebral Palsy
Myasthenia Gravis
Muscular Dystrophy
Mental Retardation

This service is rendered free of charge to any child under the age of 18 regardless of race, creed or color.  The only pre-requisite is that the child must be sponsored by a local GROTTO. We do not cover children covered by Medicaid/Medical card nor any type of orthodontics or re-constructive jaw surgeries.  All other dental needs can be pre authorized for payment to the local dentist and or hospital.

When the program began it was set through Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.  In 1988 Medical College of Ohio was a second regional hospital set to care for patients that could not seek help locally and needed hospitalization.  When the patient is capable of some cooperation with the dentist the service can be rendered locally.  The Humanitarian Foundation has made this possible through a unique partnership with qualified dentists throughout the country.  the parents of the child select their own dentist and or hospital, which enable the program through the local Grotto to provide dental care to more children.
